Most in the glass industry will be aware of the hazards of working at height and the need to take particularly stringent care. Falls from height are still the biggest killer whilst at work in the UK.

The Health & Safety Executive released it most recent UK Fatality Statistics at the beginning of July.

Location

The location of the incident was at the junction of Berkeley Street and Stratton Street which are just behind Park Lane where the Glass Awards are hosted each year. The Mayfair Hotel and London’s most exclusive Rolls Royce dealership at a stone’s throw from were the young man landed. Streets were closed and the neighbourhood was in shock.

The London Air Ambulance was deployed, landing in nearby Hyde Park with a rapid response team making their way to the incident. The man was pronounced dead and a regular ambulance was called to take his body to hospital.

Statement

A Structure Tone statement read: ‘We are aware of a tragic incident that occurred at our project site on Stratton Street in London today. Our thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time. The emergency services attended the site and we are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident’.

Investigation

The HSE immediately joined the investigation and is now the lead investigating authority. It is unknown at this stage which company/contractor the man was working for.

Structure Tone, a global developer, insists its supply chain works to the highest standards. The company will be embarrassed that those standards appear not to have been met in this case and a family is still coming to terms with the consequences.

The death of a worker on a London construction site is a tragedy that reminds us all why safety must never become routine. Working at height remains the biggest cause of workplace fatalities in the UK, despite the industry's continued efforts to improve standards. Every employer, contractor and installer has a responsibility to ensure that every person who leaves for work returns home safely. Our thoughts are with the man's family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.
